Ill Wind

Boston-based Ill Wind was a regular perfomer at the old rock ballroom The Boston Tea Party in the ‘60s, and even played its last official gig there in its first incarnation back in 1968. The band featured three former MIT students – Ken Frankel on guitar and banjo, Richard Griggs on guitar, and Carey Mann on bass – plus Conny Devanney on lead vocals and David Kinsman on drums. The band mixed psychedelia with jazz, blues, and bluegrass, and recorded a single LP Flashes for ABC in 1968. The respected British music magazine Mojo recently noted that the album included “some of the finest psychedelia conceivable.” But like too many Boston bands from that era, it received poor support from its record label and quickly broke up. A second incarnation lasted from 1970-73, which at times included Larry Carsman and Walter Bjorkman (formerly of Cloud and Swallow) on guitar, Michael Walsh on bass and Bryant Thayer on piano.
