By the time Joan Baez had an affair with Bob Dylan and wrote about it in her 1975 song "Diamonds and Rust," the golden-throated folk singer already had a wall of gold albums. She began her career in 1959, in Boston and Cambridge coffeehouses, and quickly realized she wasn't cut out for schooling at Boston University. "I remember one teacher whose class I was flunking," she says. "He said, 'If you bring your guitar and sing a couple of songs, I'll pass you.' It was the only passing grade I got." Baez also did some beautiful singing with her late sister Mimi Farina. Long a political activist, she shone in both words and song on the opening night of Woodstock.
